Beijing will restrain the construction of budget apartments in its Chaoyang District's Olympic zone, according to a development plan issued yesterday, Beijing News reported.

The Olympic zone is expected to have a strictly controlled population. It will mainly feature luxury apartments to attract elites from every industry. The annual population growth in the zone will be restricted to within 0.15 percent by 2010, the report said.

The project also featured a scheme of "one axis, two parks, three sections, four pillar industries and five key tasks" for the Olympic zone, which will cover an area of 67.4 square kilometers and will be centered by the Olympic Park.

The "one axis" referred to the Olympic Avenue, which will function as the trunk road in the zone. The "two parks" referred to the Olympic Park and the Jianxiang Science & Technology Park, both of which will be built alongside the avenue.

The "three sections" will be an ecological section, an educational section and a residential section. Tourism, exhibition, technical service and entertainment will contribute to the zone as the "four pillar industries," the report said.
