Former Residence of Mao Dun

The former residence of Mao Dun is located in a small quadrangle of Beijing traditional characteristic, which is in No. 13 Yuanensi Alley , back of Jiaodaokou south street. Mao Dun spent his last years in this place. And the Museum of Former Residence formally opened in March, 1985.

Mao Dun was born in 1896 in Tongxiang Wu Town of Zhejiang Province, and his original name was Sheng Dehong, another name was Yanbing. Russian October Revolution had great influence on his early years. He was indulged in literary career after May 4th movement, and had organized the "Literature Research Unity" together with Zheng Zhengduo, Ye Shengtao and other people to promote human realistic literature. He counterattacked the cultural besiege of the Guomingtang authority by his pen. He promoted the development of anti-war art and supported the people's liberation war. After the founding of our country, he served as Minister of Ministry of the Central Culture, vice chairman of Country's Political and Consultative Committee. He also served as vice chairman of China Culture League and chairman of China Writers Association for long time.

Mao Dun's former residence sits north and faces south. It is divided into two parts with totally 22rooms. Since the museum was open, all displays in the study, bedroom and living room are strictly placed according the original lay-out. The west room of the front court is a living room, and the sofa, vases, antithetical couplet on the wall are all the original ones used by Mao Dun. The display in the north room introduces Mao Dun's life and his career of literature creation. The pictures and articles displayed in the east wing present the great effort for our country's culture construction and world peace made by Mao Dun after the founding of the country. The items on display includes certificate of appointment, representative certificate, original manuscript, written recording materials and his pens, tape-recorders, stamps, etc. The back room is Mao Dun's study and bedroom and it is full of books. Chinese classics and foreign classics and his own books form a " Mao Dun book store".
